Prof. Hans Aerts is chair of the department of medical biochemistry at LIC-Leiden University since 2015, following his position as chair of the Department of Biochemistry at the AMC/University of Amsterdam (2000-14).

Hans Aerts focuses his investigations on glycosphingolipids in health and disease, particularly in relation to inherited lysosomal storage disorders (e.g. Gaucher disease) and the acquired metabolic syndrome. His interest in these fields includes also biomarker discovery, diagnosis and therapies. Novel chemical tools are employed in his fundamental and applied research.

He has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers and more than 100 book chapters and other scientific papers. His H-index is 71 WOS; 78 Research Gate; 90 Google Scholar.

He has been the recipient of various (inter)national governmental research grants, most recently the NWO-BBOL Research Grant ‘Glucosylceramide’.
